(RTTNews.com) – Low-cost airline Southwest is planning to launch a new service to Hawaii by next year. The first flight will be operating from California, and ticket sales will be beginning in 2018.
The airline announced its plan at a company gathering in Southern California. Gary Kelly, chairman and CEO of the airline said, “Hawaii is an important place for Southwest Airlines because so many people count on us to take them everywhere they want to go reliably and affordably. We’re ready and excited to address a request we’ve heard for years.”
In a tweet, the largest low-cost carrier in the world said, “You heard that right. We’re thrilled to share our intention to bring our world-famous hospitality and value to the Hawaiian Islands!”
The airline has been promising to start a service to Honolulu for the last several years. It will seek the approval from the Federal Aviation Administration for Extended Operations, a regulatory requirement to operate between the mainland, and the Hawaiian islands.
Andrew Watterson, executive vice president of Southwest said the new service will bring down the market price of tickets Hawaii.
