‘I’m an idiot. I (still) smoke and do all those things I shouldn’t do. I’ve been off them (cigarettes) for 10 days but, you know, I don’t want to say I’m off them, mate, because you know I’ll probably have another one in a week.’

‘Do the maths – I have been smoking for 36 years, I would continuously lie to myself about how much I smoked,’ Russell said at the time.
‘[I was] smoking 40 on an easy day, but on a day when I would be up at 4am and still up at midnight, then it was 60-plus and it just got to the point where my body was telling me I had to stop.’

But in 2010, The Daily Record reported that Mel had credited becoming a father as the reason behind packing in his 45-year long bad habit.
‘It was torture. The first three days, I was like an axe murderer,’ the actor explained of how hard it was to give up.
‘Day four, I’d come at you with a bat. Day five, I was dangerous with a lawn mower. It is a hellish habit to break.’
