It’s no secret that celebrities love the slopes – whether it’s because they can put on a helmet and pair of goggles and easily blend in with the common folk in the chairlift queue, or because they can splash the cash on luxury chalets and private jets.
From politicians to royalty, reality television stars and A-list actors, the world’s slopes are awash with celebrities and their families.
To help you sniff out the big names, luxury chalet company Firefly Collection has put together a map of the ski resorts where you’re most likely to spot celebs on the slopes.
Using a rating scale of ice cold to red hot to determine the number of celebrities likely to visit each resort, the results have been presented in a series of easy-to-understand infographics.
Resorts included on the list include a handful of Colorado’s most popular destinations, such as Aspen, Snowmass, Vail, Beaver Creek and Jackson Hole, as well as Park City in Utah and California’s Mammoth Mountain.
Verbier comes out top as the resort most likely to be visited by celebrities, and with a plethora of luxury chalets to choose from, plus some of the world’s most varied and challenging terrain, it’s easy to see why.
The resort is famously popular with the likes of Pippa Middleton and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, along with Madonna; Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York; and members of the sporting elite, including World Cup-winning rugby player Lawrence Dallaglio.
The most likely country to bump into an A-lister in is the USA, with many American celebrities opting to stay on their side of the pond for their winter holiday.
If you’d prefer not to brush shoulders with the big names and their entourage in the self-service queue at lunch than Austria seems to be a celeb-free haven, with only a handful of names including Claudia Schiffer and John Travolta visiting. Italy is also largely untouched with only Heston Blumenthal favouring Courmayeur and model Naomi Campbell enjoying the luxury of Cortina, according to Firefly Collection.
As for the personalities you’re most like to be sharing a chairlift with (security permitting), the Kardashian clan are amongst the keenest skiers, with Vail, Colorado, being their destination of choice, as documented in their reality television show.
It’s no surprise that the rich and famous are attracted by the allure of some of the world’s most luxurious ski resorts. The finest ski chalets now boast facilities such as wine cellars, games rooms, private chefs, gyms, hot tubs and swimming pools as standard. Some resorts have their own private airports, and they’re prepared to cater for visitors’ every need with Michelin-starred restaurants and high streets full of swanky shops.
The British royals, including William, Kate and her sister Pippa, also top the list, following their numerous trips to Europe in recent years, including Courchevel and Verbier. However, Prince Harry breaks the mould of his royal relatives and has been known to prefer skiing in lesser-known resorts such as Shymbulak in Kazakhstan.
The Beckhams are also regulars to the slopes, favouring Whistler in Canada, and material girl Madonna, a keen snow-sports fan, is known for her annual trips to Switzerland’s finest resorts Gstaad and Zermatt.
